Objectives:
Research, design, and define a strategy for a comprehensive cloud gaming solution on the IBM Z/LinuxONE platform to provide infrastructure as a service to this rapidly growing market segment.

Situation & Tasks:
With the rising popularity of cloud gaming and an evident shift towards streaming-based gaming platforms, IBM had sought to establish an infrastructure-as-a-service offering for cloud streaming services and database management within this growing industry. The aim was to create a strategy and product roadmap that leveraged IBM Z/LinuxONE’s superior performance and I/O capabilities, reduced latency, and wider accessibility to video game studios and distributors.

Actions:

  • Comprehensive Market Research: Conducted deep market analysis to gain insights into existing cloud gaming platforms, user preferences, and potential market gaps.

  • User-Centric Design Workshops: Organized and facilitated user testing sessions and customer design workshops to ensure the platform met user expectations and industry standards.

  • Product Roadmapping: Led a cross-functional team of product managers in crafting a detailed product strategy, covering every aspect from feature ideation to anticipated market trends over a 2-year horizon.

  • Financial Strategy Development: Designed comprehensive financial models to understand potential profitability, pricing strategies, and ROI.

  • Client Engagement & Alignment: Forged strategic customer partnerships with top-tier gaming studios, ensuring the platform was equipped with a rich library of high-demand games from day one.

  • Infrastructure Blueprint: Laid out a robust infrastructure design and initiated prototyping, emphasizing scalability, performance, and seamless user experiences.

  • Go-to-Market Strategy: Devised and tested an impactful GTM plan, ensuring optimum market penetration and rapid adoption among the target audience.

Results:
Successfully conceptualized and spearheaded the development of a cloud gaming solution that promised enhanced gaming experiences, achieved early partnerships with industry-leading game studios, and enabled informed executive decision making about investment requirements, timelines, launch partners, and delivery expectations. The IBM Cloud Gaming on Z pitch won 1st place in the 2019 IBM Global Bluehack and was subsequently handed-off to IBM Services along with client-partners for development & delivery.
